Why Walk? Why Donate?
Please join Health Equity Alliance, the HEAL Client Advisory Board, and the Down East community for our annual AIDS Walk in Ellsworth on June 5th. This date coincides with HIV Long-Term Surviors Awareness Day.
On June 5. 1981, the CDC published the first report about a mysterious illness affecting young gay men. It was AIDS before it had a name. Forty years later, there’s a sizeable population of women and men living longest with HIV/AIDS who know much about surviving the AIDS pandemic. 25% of 1.2 million people living with HIV in the US are long-term survivors.
For almost 35 years Health Equity Alliance has provided FREE care, support groups, advocacy and prevention services for the Northern Maine community. Your fundraising and donations will go directly to these efforts.
Science NOT Stigma: U=U
Our theme for this walk is to promote awareness and understanding that Undetectible = Untransmittable. Advancements in treatment mean that those who are aware of their HIV+ status and have access to treatment can get to a point where the virus is undetectable in their blood and they have a 0% chance of passing it on to another person.
